The new Audi A1 Sportback is presented as one of the most interesting revisitations of 2018. Agile and quick this compact 5-door seems to mark a milestone in the history of the smallest Audi. The first important change compared to the previous version certainly concerns the dimensions, in particular, the increase in wheelbase, which leads the former 3 doors to become a 5 door still maintaining its image of a youthful and spirited car.
Now let’s take a closer look at the new Audi A1 sizes.
The new Audi A1 measures 402 cm in length, 174 cm in width and 140 cm in height. Notice the 256cm of the wheelbase, increased thus making the car much more spacious inside than in the past. Also notice the size of the trunk that gains over 60 liters of extra space, reaching a declared capacity of 335 liters and, with the seats completely lowered, it can reach 1070 liters of capacity.
The Audi A1 is equipped with the new Volkswagen MBQ platform, the same mounted on the new Volkswagen Polo and on the new Seat Ibiza which led the new Audi A1 to be lower, wider and longer than in the past.
Audi A1 Sportback: engine, performance and consumption
Audi A1 is available with three different petrol engines at launch. In particular, we find:
- the 25 TFSI, 1.0 three-cylinder 95 bhp
- the 30 TFSI, 0 116 bhp always 3-cylinder
- the 35 TFSI, 1.5, 150 bhp 4-cylinder.
- We find another possible engine in the Premium version of the new Audi A1 with 200 hp.
The house declares an average consumption of 4.6-6 liters per 100km (more specifically between 5 and 8 in urban and between 4 and 5 for extra-urban).
Although it falls within the compact segment and being the smallest of the house, the Audi A1 appears to have a good performance on urban and extra-urban roads although, given its aggressive lines and its constant reference to speed, it would seem to require a slightly more powerful engine, at least for the three-cylinder versions. The 150 hp sports version, on the other hand, shows the full potential of this car.
Body and interior
The intention that immediately shines from looking at the new Audi A1 is to create a compact car with a sporty soul. As mentioned, this car is a tribute to the mythical Sport Quattro of 1984, as you see in the three slots present under the edge of the front hood.
Every detail of the body recalls the idea of speed starting from the front with brand new elongated and aggressive headlights that are set on the sides of a very important single-frame grille embellished with a 3D effect that surrounds the Audi crest.
In the rear part, the front optical groups are larger than in the past and designed with a pleasant three-dimensional effect. To confirm the idea of sportsmanship that the designers of Audi A1 wanted to follow we also find two air vents in the lower part of the car which, although without practical use, give the car an idea of speed and aggressiveness.
As soon as you enter the car what immediately emerges is the pleasant three-dimensional effect given by the dashboard and by the very elongated air vents set between two more protruding levels.
The seat and the steering wheel are fully adjustable (mechanically) and the instrumentation, at least for Italy, is completely digital. The steering wheel is in synthetic leather, as well as some details in the doors and in the gearshift area, different controls are provided directly on it including the sequential change. Various interior colors are available with more or less complex and refined textures.
When it comes to the technological sector, we find a tailor-made solution for the driver with a Driver-oriented position, the instrumentation oriented towards the driver. Everything is regulated through a display of more than 10 inches that manages all Audi Connect navigation and infotainment controls. The MMI navigation system with MMI radio plus is not standard.
So the New Audi A1 has nothing to envy to the most famous cars of the house from this point of view and not even on the safety equipment. In fact, in addition to the display for the controls, the braking safety system and the distance control radar (level 2) are standard.
All in all
This new small compact enters the sector aggressively. Thanks to its new dimensions it is a valid alternative for all needs.
Its main defect is probably the price, a little high for the category. The new Audi A1 is sold starting from € 21,750.00 but, by entering some necessary specifications, but not as standard, the price tends to go up very quickly.
In conclusion, this car that refers in some way to the rally of the 80s shows, at least outwardly, a sporting soul that wants to show off its muscles. It has excellent performance already in its basic version and has little to envy to its much more expensive older sisters.
