Maserati Levante, the luxury yet sporty SUV

Maserati, a brand of pure elegance and sporting spirit, has decided to make compromises: The automotive market is hungry for SUVs and Maserati could not stay with arms folded so in 2016 it produced Levante, the direct suv competitor to Porsche Cayenne but also to Audi Q7, BMW x5 and Mercedes Gle. To this day, it remains faithful to its previous aesthetic with some improvement in terms of external and internal details.

Levante, the free SUV developed by the Italian luxury brand has dimensions of all respect: 5m in length, 1.96 in width and 1.67m in height. It is a car of a thousand spirits, a raised GranTurismo that combines comfort and determination even for those seeking the pleasure of driving, creating a well-balanced car suitable for any eventuality. The aesthetic is really massive and the front is the element that stands out most in terms of design.

Aggressive or quite exterior?

It expresses pure aggressiveness thanks to the sharp lines, as in the adaptive matrix full led headlights that are thin and well fitted into the front grille, even the bonnet is no less with its ribs and bulges. In the middle, instead, the concave-shaped mask with the chromed Maserati trident is placed. The grille hides the air intakes that open and close automatically depending on the air requirements of the car.

The lateral part of Levante is more sinuous and abandons lines that are too sharp, housing the 3 mini air intakes (an inevitable and distinctive element of Maserati cars). Arriving at the rear we have the “calm after the storm”, if in front of the aggression is at the highest levels, the design of the back is much quieter and calmer, perhaps not too in line with the general logic of the car. Two optic groups with soft geometry and developed horizontally are placed, on the lower part there are the 4 exhaust pipes.

Maserati Levante: interiors

The trunk is a 580 liter slightly less roomy than the competitor Cayenne, useful are the nets on the sides and under the hair to store the objects, there is also a 12v socket and hooks and metal guides to fix the luggage. Passing to the passenger compartment very rare but extremely beautiful the doors without frames around the windows. The windows also have the option for the sun blinds that are raised electrically with a button.

At the rear of the passenger compartment you can enter easily and once seated you have no problems with legs and feet only in height there is slightly less space due to the panoramic roof, the seats are also adjustable in inclination and there is the presence of an automatic climate. Before we can instead appreciate the true essence of Levante, the “refinement and elegance”, thanks to excellent skins, the use of special woods, carbon and there is also the possibility of refined fabrics derived from Ermenegildo Zegna.

The assembly is excellent throughout the cockpit except for some “boredom” in the glass compartment. On the driver’s side, we have an instrument panel with a 7-inch TFT display while the speedometer and tachometer are analog. The dashboard has a very intuitive and easy-to-use Maserati Touch Control Plus infotainment set in the center. This system also manages the heating of the front seats, the ventilation, the heating of the steering wheel, the movement of the electric sunscreen for the rear window.

There is also the function of rear camera, Apple Car Play (Apple Siri allows many functions thanks to voice commands) and Android Auto. Finally, the 900watt Premium Harman Kardon system with 14 speakers or even the Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system with 17 loudspeakers and 1280 watts of power is optional.

Mechanics and security

As for the most technical part of this car we find: an intelligent Q4 drive thanks to the torque distribution system, the latter is all transferred to the rear wheels making us experience the sporting emotion of a rear-wheel drive but which, if necessary, in cases of lack of grip manages to balance the torque at 50-50 between front and back in just 150 thousand seconds, making the transition imperceptible.

The gearbox is a 8-speed ZF with parking function button and with different settings such as: auto normal (soft change at low revs), manual normal (changed through the paddles behind the steering wheel or always on the central tunnel lever), car sport (changed much more reactive for a sportier ride), manual sport (the driver totally controls the gearbox, only the climb remains automatic in case of too low engine speed), off-road car (useful precisely in off-road and comfortable for fully automatic management), manual off road (modality with which the driver sets a speed that the east maintains even uphill), ICE (better control and efficiency in cases of low grip).

From the security point of view we have: Maserati Stability Program, 6 airbags, integrated vehicle control, seat belts with pretensioner, LKA (lane keeping assistant), HAS (system to assist driving on the highway), road signs recognition, integrated control of the vehicle, advanced front collision avoidance, active blind spot assistance, surround view camera, HDC (hill descent control).
