There is little to say, the 718 Boxster S, the convertible 2-seater of the Porsche 718 series, just can’t go unnoticed! It is a pleasure to look at it, but driving it is an experience that will fascinate and win over lovers of sporty driving, who will not find themselves regretting the classic 2.7-liter aspirated flat-six engine.
The 718 Boxster S, with a height of 1,280 mm, a width of 1,801 mm (1994 mm with exterior mirrors), a wheelbase of 2,475 mm and a length of 4,379 mm, has a 64-liter tank. The declared coefficient of resistance (Cx) is 0.32. The empty weight of 1,430 kg, rises to 1,460 kg. in the version with PDK gearbox. The maximum load is 310 kg.
Engine: less is more
The courageous decision taken in Stuttgart to replace the old 2.7-liter aspirated six-flat engine with the 4-cylinder Boxer Termo compressed, supplied with the 718 series cars, was operated to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.
Unlike the 718 Boxster which is fitted with the 2-liter, 300-hp version, the S model boasts the 2.5-liter version, with turbocharger, fitted with a variable-geometry turbine (VTG), with 350 hp – 257 kW. Maximum torque 420 Newton meters, delivered between 2,100 and 4,500 rpm. The maximum speed is 285 km / h.
Considerable acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h of 4.6 (for cars with manual gearbox) and 4.4 seconds (for cars with PDK gearbox). Values that can be reduced up to 4.2 s, for cars with PDK transmission, thanks to the Sport Chrono package and the Launch Control function which, although not standard, should be taken into serious consideration when customizing. The consumption of the 718 Boxster S recorded 12.7 l / 100 km on an urban route (in the case of cars with manual gearboxes) and 11.8 l / 100 km (for cars with a PDK gearbox), while on an extra-urban route the consumption of cars with manual transmission it changes to 7.1 l / 100 km and 6.5 l / 100 km with PDK gearbox.
Mechanical superiority and cutting-edge technology
The central positioning of the engine allows a better weight balance and contributes to the exceptional road holding of the 718 Boxster S, on every course. One of the options to be looked at with particular attention is the PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung) 7-speed double clutch robotized gearbox. Docile and immediate, it is offered as an alternative to the standard 6-speed gearbox, standard.
Standard suspension, both front and rear: Porsche optimized McPherson. One-piece brake calipers with four fixed pistons front and rear, ventilated and perforated discs, front 330 mm diameter, rear 299 mm. Options include perforated ceramic discs with a larger PCCB diameter (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake), which reduce braking distance even at high speeds.
The PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management), which is also optional, electronically adjusts the shock absorbers, adapting them to any type of road surface and to the driving style selected, ensuring greater driving stability. Among the options, we find the new PASM frame, intended only for the S model, which lowers the body by 20 mm and features stiffer and shorter suspensions. Another optional control system is the PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring) which acts on driving dynamics and stability, with variable torque distribution to the rear wheels, and which is equipped with a mechanical self-locking rear differential.
The direct steering of the 718 Boxster S offers a more rapid reduction ratio than in the past. As an alternative to the standard power steering, it is possible to equip the car with a power steering Plus, which guarantees better maneuverability during parking and at low speeds.
The PSM (Porsche Stability Management) automatic adjustment system further contributes to stability, increases traction and optimizes the ABS braking system. In the 718 Boxster S convertibles, a rollbar system, front and rear, protects the passenger compartment in the event of rollover or side impact. The S model mounts wheels with the new 19-inch design, which are also offered in the 20-inch version. The new Bi-Xenon headlights, with integrated LED daytime running lights, can be replaced by four-point LED headlights with daytime running lights.
Porsche 718 Boxster S: performance issue
What conquers the 718 Boxster S is the constant feeling of control of the car, which meekly responds to any solicitation, supported by an incredible synergy between the electronic components and systems, which tame or excite its 350 hp, without losing sight of safety and stability.
The low position of the seats makes it possible to gain space in height, guaranteeing a comfortable driving position and, in general, making the passenger compartment sufficiently spacious and comfortable. The instrumentation, rigorously “Porsche style”, is enhanced by the “Mode” knob that allows you to set the desired driving style, among the four options provided: Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual. When it comes to the steering wheel, as an alternative to the standard 375 mm, you can choose the 360 mm sports model.
The electrically adjustable bucket seats, available upon request, allow you to find the trim that best fits each one, storing it with the Memory program they come with. The same Memory package also records the chosen position of the mirrors and the steering wheel.
Thanks to the central position of the engine, the 718 Boxster S has a double luggage compartment. The front has a capacity of 150 liters, while the rear has a capacity of 125 liters, regardless of the opening or closing of the hood. In the passenger compartment there are also several spacious storage compartments, positioned under the armrest and in the doors. There are also coat hooks and practical beverage holders.
Porsche 718 Boxster S: infotainment and price
The new “Porsche Communication Management” multimedia system with a 7-inch touch screen is offered as standard, offering the typical performance of the tablet. Instead, the Connect Plus system is optional – to manage the apps of your iPhone and create an internal Wi-Fi network – and the GPS, through which you can monitor traffic in real time.
The basic price of the 718 Boxster S is euro 71,951 including VAT. As complained by many, the scarce “prodigality” of the standard equipment of the 718 Series is also found in the 718 Boxster S. Among the infinite range of options, some seem essential to enhance the performance, safety and driving comfort, but bring the price to much higher levels.
