The 718 Series, which debuted in 2016 in the two Cayman and Boxster models, at the end of 2018 was enriched by the new T (Touring) version, which brings the pleasure of sporty driving to the fore. Centrally positioned for optimal weight distribution, the 4-cylinder Boxer engine – supercharged by the turbocharger, with a GPD particulate filter – has a power of 300 hp – 220 kW and a maximum torque of 380 Newton meters, between 1,900 and 4,500 rpm min. The maximum speed is 275 km / h. Traction is back.
As for acceleration, it is the change that makes the difference. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h with a manual gearbox is 5.1 seconds, falling to 4.9 with the PDK gearbox. A further reduction to 4.7 s is possible thanks to the Launch Control function (in combination with the PDK gearbox).
The standard 6-speed manual gearbox, with short strokes and a shorter lever, ensures faster shifting, while the Sport Chrono package in Sport and Sport Plus mode optimizes gear shifting, for an even more “adrenaline” drive. The PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung), robotized, double-clutch, 7-speed gearbox, offered as an option, has a significant impact on performance.
The decision to equip the 718 Series cars with a 4-cylinder engine, as an alternative to the traditional 6-cylinder engine, was aimed at reducing emissions and fuel consumption. On an urban route, the 718 Boxster T consumes 11.3 l / 100 Km with manual transmission and 10.8 l / 100 Km with PDK gearbox. Consumption on extra-urban routes drops 6.3 l / 100 km (with manual gearbox) and 6.2 l / 100 km (with PDK gearbox).
Porsche 718 Boxster T: sports chassis and more
The main characteristic of a sports car is its way of facing curves. The 718 Boxster T, in addition to the central position of the engine, a reduction in weight, and a lowering of 20 mm compared to the basic models of the Series, owes its superb performance to the PASM sports chassis.
The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is an electronic system to adjust the rigidity of the shock absorbers, which works according to the conditions of the road and the type of driving chosen, between the two options “Normal” and “Sport”. The PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring), standard, with the mechanical self-locking rear differential, operates a variable distribution of torque to the rear wheels, for better dynamics and stability in curves and on uneven road surfaces.
The 718 Boxster T, with a 2,475 mm wheelbase, has a length of 4,379 mm, a width of 1,801 mm, and a height of 1,264 mm. Characterized, in the aerodynamic field, by a coefficient of resistance (Cx) equal to 0.31, it mounts a 54 liter tank.
When sportsmanship is a matter of DNA
The symbol T (Touring) has always been synonymous with passion for driving. A passion that we see perpetuated in the 718 Boxster T. The braking system, with black brake calipers, front and rear fixed monobloc, four-piston and self-ventilated perforated discs (front diameter 330 mm – rear diameter 299 mm), is optimized by the program of stability PSM (Porsche Stability Management), supplied as standard. The parking brake is electric.
The GT sports steering wheel, with a diameter of 360 mm, can be manually adjusted both in height and in depth. The power steering is electromagnetic, with variable transmission ratio and steering impulses. The polished 20 ”Carrera S wheels, titanium gray, stand out under the raised wheel arches.
The change of the wheel arches also highlights the Bi-Xenon main headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. The top of this spirited roadster is totally electric, equipped with a glass rear window, which can also be operated by remote control, up to a speed of 50 km / h, while the rear spoiler is automatically operated.
In terms of safety, in addition to the fixed roll-bar and full-size airbags for driver and passenger, the 718 Boxster T has a POSIP (Porsche Side Impact Protection System) with internal protections to the doors against side impacts.
The enrichment of the standard equipment, which contributes to enhancing its sporting soul, sees among the protagonists the Sport Chrono Package, with the “Mode” button, which allows you to choose the driving style that best suits the rider and the route, among 4 different options: Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual.
Porsche 718 Boxster T: interior
The simple and essential design of the black interior of the 718 Boxster T is perfectly in compliance with its sporting spirit. Standard features include the Sports seats Plus, with raised sides, electric adjustment of the backrest and manual height and feed, with edges and headrest in leather and central band in Sport-Tex.
As an alternative, sports seats with shell, also in a lighter version, in carbon fiber are available as options. Standard activated carbon conditioner. The soft top covering is made of fabric. Equipped with front and rear luggage rack, it offers various storage compartments, beverage holders and coat hooks.
Infotainment and price
The standard equipment of the 718 Boxster T does not include the new PCM (Porsche Communication Management), with the telephone module and audio interfaces set-ups, which is however installed on request, without any cost increase. You can choose to opt out of PCM to compensate for the increase in weight of the car due to the installation of the GPF anti-particulate system. The space left free by the PCM is used for a large storage compartment.
The price of the 718 Boxster T, with standard equipment, is 68,078 euros including VAT.
