All enthusiasts, “Porsche addicted”, will surely let themselves be thrilled by the performance of the 718 Cayman S, the gritty 350 hp coupe, in which nothing is left to chance, as in the best tradition of one of the most prestigious and beloved car manufacturers in the world.
The 718 Cayman S, with a height of 1,295 mm, a width of 1,801 mm (1,994 mm with exterior mirrors), a wheelbase of 2,475 mm and a length of 4,379 mm, differs from the basic model for the capacity of the tank, which goes from 54 to 64 liters. The declared coefficient of resistance (Cx) is 0.31. The empty weight of 1,430 kg rises to 1,460 kg in the version with PDK gearbox. The maximum load is 310 kg.
Porsche 718 Cayman S: engine and performance
In the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster series cars, the old 2.7-liter aspirated flat-six engine has been replaced by a small, turbocharged, centrally positioned 4-cylinder boxer with exceptional performance. While the 718 Cayman “base” is equipped with the 2-liter version, which brings the power to 300 hp, compared to the 275 of its predecessor, for the 718 Cayman S the 2.5-liter version was chosen, with a turbocharger equipped with a geometry turbine variable (VTG) and a wastegate valve, from 349 (50 more than the 2 liters). The 420 Newton meters of torque delivered between 2,100 and 4,500 rpm show an increase of 50 Nm, compared to the past. The maximum speed is 285 km / h.
Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h (for cars with manual gearbox) is 4.6 seconds, while for cars with PDK gearbox it drops to 4.4. A further reduction in acceleration to 4.2 s. it is registered on cars equipped with PDK gearbox and Sport Chrono package, with Launch Control function (optional, but highly recommended on the 718 Cayman S). The Sport Chrono package, in fact, allows, among other things, to select the driving settings (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual) and – through the Launch Control function – ensures a better start shot. As for the consumption of the 718 Cayman S, they stand at 12.7 l / 100 km on an urban route (manual gearbox) and 11.8 l / 100 km (PDK gearbox), while on an extra-urban route they drop to 7.1 l / 100 km (manual gearbox) and 6.5 l / 100 km (PDK gearbox).
Excellent mechanics and advanced technology
Thanks to the central positioning of the engine, which contributes to a better weight balance, the 718 Cayman S offers an extraordinary road holding and agility, which adapt to different driving and course styles.
The standard gearbox is the traditional 6-speed gearbox, but the 7-speed PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung) robotized dual-clutch gearbox, which is docile and extremely fast, is available on request. Almost a must on the 718 Series models. Among the options for only the 718 Cayman S model, we find the PASM sports chassis, which lowers the body by 20 mm, and features shorter and more rigid suspensions.
The standard suspensions, both front and rear, are by McPherson. One-piece brake calipers with four fixed pistons front and rear, ventilated and perforated discs, front with 330 mm diameter, rear at 299 mm. Available on request the PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake) whose perforated ceramic discs, with a larger diameter, guarantee very high power and reduced braking space, even at high speeds.
The direct steering of the Cayman 718 offers a more rapid reduction ratio than in the past. As an alternative to the standard power steering, it is possible to equip the car with power steering Plus, which offers better maneuverability when parking and at low speeds. The 718 Cayman – both base and S – has an even more advanced version of the PSM (Porsche Stability Management) automatic adjustment system, which helps to stabilize the car and improve traction, and an ABS for optimizing the brakes.
The circles, renewed in design, in the S version are 19 inches, but are also offered in a version with a lower shoulder, 20 inches. The 8 J x 18 ET 57 front wheels are fitted with 235/45 ZR18 94 Y tires, while the 9,5JX18ET49 rear wheels are fitted with wider 265/45 ZR18 101 Y tires, which ensure greater stability and cornering grip. Always present the rear spoiler, removable both manually and automatically, starting from a speed of 120 km / h. The new Bi-Xenon headlights have integrated LED daytime running lights. Among the options, four-point LED headlights with daytime running lights are also offered.
Driving a myth
Driving in the city, in traffic, turns out to be fluid and pleasant, also thanks to the PDK dual-clutch gearbox, particularly comfortable in traffic. Furthermore, the optional electronic shock absorbers guarantee good comfort even on paved roads. The rear visibility, however, is not the best and it is advisable to use parking sensors and a rear-view camera.
On extra-urban routes and on the motorway, consumption is significantly reduced and once again the performance of the steering wheel and gearbox, the speed of transmission and the thrust of the engine are appreciated. Braking power and exceptional road holding ensure all riders – more or less “sailed” – exhilarating driving experiences.
Space and connection
Although the seats are very low, the passenger compartment is more spacious than expected and ensures a comfortable position for both the driver and the passenger. The range of options concerning the seats is vast, from the upholstery to the prestigious finishes, without counting the electric settings that can be memorized: in short, there is nothing to choose from.
To be a coupe, the 718 Cayman S offers a double trunk (front and rear) with a total capacity of around 350 liters. It should be noted that the front trunk does not lend itself to large baggage. The new “Porsche Communication Management” multimedia system, with a 7 “touch screen, is offered as standard.
The base price of the 718 Cayman S is € 69,877 inclusive of VAT (compared to the 57,098 of the 718 Cayman). The scarce standard equipment, which requires a rich selection of options, is unfortunately noticeable, raising prices very sensitively.
